If you have just purchased your dream home, I’m sure you’ll find something that isn’t so dreamy about it. One example is when you lift the carpet to find the awful condition of the wooden floors underneath. If you decide to repair or refinish wood floors, you should prepare yourself for the grinding work involved in the process.

Before you start sanding, it is a good idea to fill any cracks or gaps that may exist on your floor. Deciding which cracks and gaps to fill is entirely up to you. However, you should keep in mind that you need to leave some gaps behind to allow the floor to expand or contract as the weather changes.

You should also make sure that you seal the room where you will be sanding to prevent the dust from spreading throughout the entire house. If the room doesn’t have a door, then you need to hang plastic sheets on the entrance in order to contain the dust.

There are essentially two types of grinders that can be used for this particular job. They are oscillating and drum sanders. Picking the right sander for the job is very important. Oscillating sander is ideal if you only need to remove the top layer of finish. This type of sander will not work if you have deep scratches that are far from the surface.

The drum sander, on the other hand, can eliminate more serious problems that may exist on the floor. When using this special sander, you should avoid staying in one position for too long as this can create a whirlpool pattern. This technique also applies to when you are learning how to install hardwood floors.

It is possible to finish sanding your floor in one weekend, but you should plan ahead to successfully carry out this kind of project. You should make sure that you have removed all the furniture in the room before you start grinding. It may take a week or so before you can move furniture back into the room. You also need to be absolutely sure that you have rented the sander long enough to accomplish the job. It’s a good idea to check with your local rental office in advance to make sure that they have enough units available, or you can have one reserved for when you need it. Sanding your floor may require a large amount of work, but the reward is worth all of it in the end. Another cool DIY project would be to learn how to make a headboard.

It is a shocking fact to discover that contaminated water claims more lives than guns. The need to supply clean drinking water to the poor of the world is more of a pressing problem than stopping armed conflict in the world.

The planet we live on might be described as blue but only 2% of the water is suitable for drinking. Of that 2% about 1% is trapped at the poles and is not available to use. That is until Global Warning makes catastrophic changes to the geography of the world.

We have so little fresh water to live on. Already 66% of all fresh water consumed is used for irrigation of crops. Many of these crops such as coffee and cotton are for money and not for food.

It is simple to realize that as the world population grows there will be more pressure on the scant remaining water supplies. As water runs out water utility prices will increase and in some parts of the world armed conflict to seize water supplies will inevitably result.

If you want to save money and save the planet from drought and water wars the sensible thing to do is to start conserving water in the home. This can be achieved by a number of means.

Firstly rainwater should be collected to use in the garden and to clean the car. Secondly, the right mental attitude should be encouraged –squandering water is wrong. Obviously swimming pools are an unnecessary luxury.

In the home a good way to reduce water use is to buy a low flow toilet or to put something in the toilet cistern to cut down flush volumes. Another good idea is to use a low flow showerhead. This is a showerhead that mixes air with water to cut by half the gallons per flow rate.

A similar idea is to put faucet aerators around the home. These are simple attachments to faucets that again mix air with water to cut down flow rates. The great thing about aerator technology is that it doesn’t affect cleaning power or spray strength.

These are just a few easy to implement ideas for reducing water use in the home. As I have already mentioned the right attitude is just as important as the technology. As soon as we come to realize the true value of water the sooner we will realize its power to give life and to cause conflict when it is running out.

A memory foam topper will definitely help you to sleep better. But if you only have a limited budget, should you save up so that you can buy the best? Frankly, I think that is not necessary. The best best memory foam mattress topper is way over-hyped, and does not offer much marginal improvement over the cheapest memory foam mattress. After all, why pay $500 if $50 will get you 90% of the same effectiveness?

Of course, you do need to know how to use your memory foam mattress pad right. If you buy, say, a 2″ memory foam mattress topper (the cheapest thickness still available in the market), it needs to be used on top of a firm mattress. If you do not currently have a firm mattress in good condition, you will have to factor in this extra cost into your budget. In this situation, you may prefer spending a bit more to buy a 4″ memory foam topper pad which can be used on its own.

These are points you only need to think about if you are keeping your old bed. If you intend to replace your old bed and mattress, you may want to consider splurging on an 8-inch double memory foam mattress. This is thick enough that you can lay it directly on the ground and still sleep on it comfortably. Because memory foam is a good insulator, you do not have to worry about the floor leaching heat away from your body when you sleep. If you look around patiently, you should be able to find one on sale for under $200.

But why save money on the bed frame to buy a double instead of the usual single? Why not choose a 12-inch mattress instead? Frankly, the bed frame is only useful to raise your mattress of the floor. With a normal mattress, and especially an inner spring mattress, this is necessary. These normal mattresses have large air spaces and allow lots of ventilation to cool the mattress down. If you lay them directly on the ground, they will leak your body heat through into the floor.

As for choosing the double over the single, that is because the full/double-sized mattress gives you more space to stretch out. A single is a bit cramped, isn’t it? And why (only) 8 inches rather than something thicker? Because an eight-inch memory foam mattress is good enough, and a 12-inch mattress is more expensive than warranted.

When buying your memory foam mattress or topper, it is not necessary to spend more than necessary. Pay for the basic type, and if you have many left over, see if you can buy a thicker or larger model.

A popular topic of discussion these days has been the use of solar power, or perhaps the lack of use. It is always interesting to have a discussion about the value of something, but ordinarily it is only worthwhile when put into practice. Environmental concerns can lead to solar energy taking on a major role in our future. Since the time of our forefathers, solar power has been employed as a heating source. There are several alternative power sources but solar may be the most practical of all of them. However, practical hands-on knowledge is still hard to get. Many people like to start small, such as with a small pond pump. You may wonder is it possible to make a solar pump for a small pond? Well, yes it is, and a small pond pump is a great starter project.

The problems seen with energy supplies has increased the demand for solar energy. We have seen for many years that there are people’s dwellings fitted with panels that provide solar power. Houses have been powered in this manner even if it is alongside conventional sources of energy. It is becoming more typical for people to be running their whole home with their solar panels. Batteries can give power each night as opposed to when you have the benefit of the daytime. Doing this, non-renewable energy is not at all used.

For a lot of homeowners, the main reason they have solar energy is to power a hot water heater. How this works in practice varies depending on the method used. Either passive energy, with the sun warming up a tank full of water, or solar collectors with the sun heating fluids to be transferred. For this method, tubes are put on the back of the solar panel installation. The sun heats up fluids inside the tubes. Water is heated up as the tubes are found alongside the water tank.

Pools require heating up and this is one more use for this. The swimming pool takes in water that the sun has heated while it was inside the tubes. Energy prices are consequently reduced for anyone who owns a pool. As solar power becomes more mainstream, there will continue to be those who look for more modern ways to tap into this. Not too long ago, a portable solar panel was created that can be used on RVs and has become popular among people who enjoy going away on vacations. Solar has furthermore been integrated with laptop and mobile phone technology. Another curios application: solar energy is frequently stored and used to power efficient L.E.D grow lights in northern climates.

As energy costs increase, the marketplace will have more of this type of product. The planet will be helped even with a gradual increase in the use of solar power. If we do not make the switch from the sources of energy we have always used then the global environment will continue to be in danger. The safety of later generations depends on us living greener lifestyles now.

Since I started my janitorial business more than 10 years ago, I have continuously had a complaint about vacuums: they lose their suction over years of use. Now I try to prevent this as much as possible by changing bags regularly and cleaning filters. Yet, this continues to be a problem. The folks that make the Shark Navigator Vacuum have somehow figured out how to solve this long-standing problem. What makes the Shark so special?

“Never Loses Suction” Science

Take a look at your old-fashioned vacuum. It has filters and bags that get clogged and contribute to a loss of vacuum. But now take a look at a Shark Vacuum. It uses what are called “cyclones.” And 21 of them to be precise. As the soil and dirt cycles and remains suspended, the Shark rarely gets clogged up. It generally cleans the last room just as well as the first.

Ease of Maintenance

How do you feel about replacing belts and filters? Did you say that you hate it? Me too. Shark has a fix for this. They call their belts and filters “lifetime” belts and filters. To help them last a long time, just simply rinse and dry your foam filters about every 6 months. Do the same for you felt filter at about 12 months. How else can you keep your Navigator in top shape? Empty your dust cup when it reaches the MAX line. Also, empty your Cyclonic chamber at about 6 months.

It’s Very Light

In one particular Shark Navigator Vacuum review, a delighted customer said it has “a compact, maneuverable design with smooth glide wheels for effortless cleaning.” Another person noted, “I am 65 years of age. Since your vacuum cleaner and steam cleaner has been introduced to me and my wife, she no longer does the floors, I do.” It is clear that young people and older ones really like the light design of the Shark.

Where Can You Find Your Navigator?

You might want to start looking at Amazon. You will find that prices vary depending on the model you choose. Expect to pay anywhere from $100 to $200. While you are there, check out the Shark Vac then Steam. It is not only a vacuum but it has an on-board steamer. Compare it with the Navigator and see which one suits your needs the best.

So if long-lasting suction, low maintenance, and lightness are important to you, consider the Shark Navigator Vacuum. It may just be what you are looking for!

If a convenient transaction is the most important aspect of purchasing solar panels, the homeowner should definitely stay away from used versions. Shopping for used solar panels can take considerably more due diligence than shopping for new panels. However, there are a few key principles that can help you disqualify a bad deal–and with used solar panels, anything less than a great deal is a bad deal. Here are some tips that can help you separate the good from the bad.

The first principle to keep in mind is that it’s essential to buy from local vendors. Online marketplaces are tempting, and recommended for many other types of used products, but solar panels have a few characteristics that need to be examined in person. You want to able to test the output for yourself, especially since most online used solar energy vendors make a point of selling as-is. You definitely don’t want to pay for shipping costs only to find out that you’ve purchased a lemon.

Related to in-person examination is testing the output of the panel yourself. You should always carry a multimeter with you when looking at solar electricity products of any kind. Since you only need to test the voltage and amperage, you don’t need a fancy multimeter; a $20 model is more than sufficient. Your goal is to see if the panel’s output is anywhere in the ballpark of it’s stated rating. Solar panel manufacturers expect the performance to degrade over time, and typically designate a 30-year life expectancy to most panels.

Don’t be surprised if the panel under examination only provides 60% to 75% of it’s original rating. While that might seem disappointing, the goal is usually not buy one panel (which is usually not enough, regardless of whether it’s new or used), but for all the panels you run together to add up to the output required for your house’s energy needs. In this context, “good enough” is relative to the price. You’ll still get all the advantages of solar power with an inefficient panel, within reason. For instance, if you can get a panel rated at 100 watts that actually outputs 50 watts for $75, your paying $1.50 a watt, which is a better deal than most new solar energy panels.

Finally, avoid buying panels that you can’t examine in person. Those online marketplaces that empower buyers to comparison shop aggressively are of no use if you have to buy pay high shipping costs before finding out that panel you bought has some defect that wasn’t brought to your attention head of time. Some of these defects look worse than they actually are. If the panel has browned over time, the performance won’t be affected. If the wiring is loose, you can solder it back into shape if you know how, or you can mend it with a silver-infused epoxy like CircuitWorks Conductive Epoxy. Crack glass or condensation trapped underneath can be fixed by replacing the glass. Keep in mind that if you see loose wiring or condensation, the conductivity will be lowered, or the continuity of the circuit may be broken–so a multimeter test will be inaccurate. Only buy solar panels with these defects if you’re willing to make the necessary repairs and can insist on a very low price.

All hardwood floors need regular care and maintenance, but your hand scraped hardwood-flooring needs extra attention. Hand scraped hardwood, by its very nature, will accumulate more dirt than other floors because the scrapes that make it so beautiful collect dirt and grime. Over time, the floor will become dull and lifeless unless you take special care of your hand scraped floor. Here are the best three things that you can do to keep you floor looking like new.

Sweep and dust mop daily

Wipe with a damp mop

Protect entrances and floors in front of windows

Alternate dust Mop and Broom

For an unused room, all you really need to do is run a dust mop over your hand scraped hardwood flooring. Even in a room that is not used, dust will settle on the floor and begin to accumulate in the cracks and grooves that make your floor so beautiful and unusual. Everyone’s hand scraped hardwood flooring has its own personality, which it can lose as it dulls from ground in dirt. In rooms that have traffic, sweep the floor vigorously with a stiff broom every other day.

Follow Warrantee Recommendations

Cleaning your hardwood flooring, especially your hand scraped hardwood flooring is not the chore that so many make it out to be. You do not have to use chemicals every time you clean you hand scraped hardwood flooring. Run a mop under water and wring until it is just damp. Mop your lovely hardwood floors with the damp mop. Once a week or so, clean your floors using only the cleaner that the manufacturer recommends or that is listed in the warrantee by following the directions on the bottle. Never use regular household cleaners on your hand scraped hardwood flooring. You can find more tips online in hand scraped hardwood flooring reviews.

Sunlight Can Fade Your Floors

When you purchased your hand scraped and unfinished hardwood flooring wholesale, you received a warrantee that should list cleaning methods that will void the warrantee. It is important to know what these are so that you can avoid them. The installation of shutters and canopies or awnings over doors and windows outside of the house will help prevent rainwater from getting on your floors. If sunlight lingers on certain part of your floors, it can fade them over time. Use shades, custom window treatments, and area rugs to protect that part of your hand scraped hardwood flooring.

Water is a precious resource and people should become more thoughtful in its conservation. Water leak is one main reason where a good deal of water is lost via leakage. You might think that how a small water leak could cause so much of water loss. Large water leaks are too troublesome and we immediately call for a water leak detection technician and have it repaired. But those smaller leaks which have water dripping them all though day and night, is left unnoticed. We usually don’t give it a thought of getting it repaired. Imagine what would happen if this is the condition in every household, how many gallons of water is lost each day. Such smaller leaks left undetected would also increase your water bill considerably.

There are automatic water leak detection devices like spot sensors which are easy to install and also affordable. These can detect any leaks in the system and automatically shuts down the main pipe supply. If you can’t afford one, then you can of course perform periodic water leak detection by yours self. First check your bathroom as it is the place in your home which has more water usage and pipes. Check all the pipes for any holes or loose joints. Check under the wash basin and closet inlet pipes. The most common point of drip leakage is from the faucet pipe. Water heater sometimes gets corroded and this might lead to water leakage.

The next point of water leakage detection must the kitchen. Check the pipes and under the sink. Check the drain for any clogs. Clogs can damage the outlet pipe and eventually damage the pipe and lead to drain overflow. Perform water leak detection on the water connection pipes to the dishwasher, water purifier and automatic ice maker. Check the water inlet pipe to the washing machine.

Another possible location for water leaks is the lawn. The sprayer, fountain and the irrigation system may have unnoticed leaks which you will recognize only on water leak detection. These water leak detection steps should be done periodically to check for any water leaks. There are simple repairs like applying epoxy putty or covering with a rubber gasket. But these are temporary solutions and you should always call for a plumber on detecting any water leaks. Sometimes you here water dripping sound but is unable to find the leak location, in such a situation make sure you call a water leak detection services technician.

You can create the perfect small bathroom design without breaking the bank – it just takes a bit of restraint and functional organization. Decorating a bathroom is different than any other room because of the relative immovability of furniture, making the process an enjoyable challenge. Sometimes limitations can actually open up new creative opportunities!

First Things First

Before you can work on creating a beautiful small bathroom design, you have to eliminate the “ugly”. And what is the ugliest form of bathroom disaster? Clutter! Items like cleaning supplies and cosmetics may often be used in the bathroom, but they can take up a lot of counter and cabinet space. Group like items together into “caddies” that can be packed up and transported from room to room. You can even put your makeup case or cleaning supplies in a hallway closet – not too far out of reach, but not clogging up valuable bathroom real-estate either.

By the way, if you really hate anything in your bathroom now is the time to take it out. You can always find a temporary replacement. Removing an eyesore can let you see the potential of the space – don’t try to work around something that you’ll never love.

Maximize Lighting

If you’re going to invest in fresh interior design ideas, at least make them bright ones! Lighting is critical to small bathroom design – these spaces can get so small and dark that it’s more like being in a cave than a washroom. Get rid of any light-restricting window shades or treatments and use airy, sheer curtains with clean lines instead. If possible, hang a functional mirror across from any light source to maximize its effect. Even a small mirror will work!

Another useful light-maximizing tactic is to reduce the shadows cast by heavy bathroom furnishings and decor. Instead by blocky cabinets, consider open-faced shelves. Replace opaque shower curtains with a glass sliding door if budget allows.

Stylishly Stow Away Toiletries

Organize, organize, organize – every inch of your small bathroom design is precious. Some of the most creative home decorating ideas are those that incorporate extra organizational functionality. If you have lots of little lotions and creams, consider grouping them together by function in decorative bowls instead of lying around on the counter or taking up space in a medicine cabinet. If it’s shelf space you need, consider rolling up hand towels to store in a basket near the sink for easy access.

You can save even more money (and explore your stylish side) buy buying things like shampoo, hand soap, lotions, and cleansers in bulk – fill decorative dispensers and containers with said products and store the rest away for later. Good for the wallet, good for the environment.

Quit feeling limited by a tiny space, and embrace the boundaries as one would the borders of a canvas. Learn the “rules” of working within close quarters and use them to your advantage – but don’t be afraid to break a few along the way! Any small bathroom design is a good design if you love it!

One of the most expensive houses in real estate is that of log houses. Not only are they expensive when purchased, they are more expensive when maintained. It is true though that they are among the most fancied houses to own by anyone with dreams of owning a house, especially when the desire to have one that looks vintage and truly represents the architectural beauty of the past. Whether newly-built or an antique one that stood since the 17th or 18th century, maintaining and preserving the power and beauty of log homes takes a lot of effort and money.

Unlike houses made entirely of concrete, log homes require more planning and preparation prior to actual restoration. Due to the exhausting work log home restoration needs, companies that have an experienced staff of professionals with the expertise in this field abound many areas in the United States. They provide several services for restoration may it be minimal or one that calls for major renovation. Do-it-yourself efforts are also welcome, although it is limited to a select few who possess carpentry exposure. DIY activities are easy to learn for as long as the person involved is knowledgeable in the standard techniques and step-by-step processes of log home restoration.

If you are planning a log home restoration project and wanted to do it on your own, here are a few basic tips you must begin with to ensure that you are doing it right.

1. Inspection is a major thing. Many experts in this field of house renovation start by inspecting the entire house. Every area and every corner is examined for rots, as they are the major cause of destruction among log homes. You can never start by buying the materials first and decide later for which part of the house you will use them. By inspecting, you are better able to identify which parts need of your home need immediate attention and which ones can wait. This is especially vital when you have limited budget to begin with. By inspecting also, you are better at later assessing the materials you are ought to be using for your project.

2. Once you have a complete list of the priority repairs, you may now proceed with deciding on which log sizes and lengths to buy. Several repairs will need several sizes. For example, if a particular log or groups of log in the home have about less than 50% of rot occurrence, then it would be impractical for you to buy a full log because a half log size would suffice. In this case for example, you will need a little assistance from a log home restoration company with the tools needed in cutting the old log in half. There are some companies that do not necessarily provide packages alone. There are also some that can offer you little work for few costs when the job needed is minimal. In essence, the logs you buy will make or break your project.

3. Aside from the importance of logs, the next essentially vital materials you will use in this project would be borate treatments, stains, and finishes. These are more important than the replacement of logs alone, for through these chemicals your log home will retain its original lustre, shine, and beauty for a longer period of time. Thanks to the advancement in log home restoration techniques, no log home owner will ever have a problem regarding black spots for as long as he knows which treatments to use for prevention.

These are only few of the most important points in log home repair. You will learn more from numerous resources: magazines, Internet, and conversations with fellow log home owners. However, nothing could ever beat the power that comes from your own experience doing the stuff you think only experts could do.
