Cleaning An Attic With Storage Bins And Secure Self Storage

America’s attics are a mess, and if you own an attic yourself, you know that this is the case. Attics are notoriously messy, and it’s usually because people don’t want to spend the time organizing them ahead of time, to ensure that when you add additional things to them they stay clear. Here are a couple ways to make sure you are keeping your attic up to speed and ready to handle anything you throw at it.

Putting all your attic storage into a storage bin before you throw it in there is a good first start, but you need to actually section off the attic off as well. Figuring out a way to specify different parts of the attic for different categories of things is a good way to keep things a little organized. If you have Christmas things in one corner, Halloween decorations in another, and clothes in a third, then there won’t be any difficulty in distinguishing where a box goes.

This can break down if you don’t have a spot for something though. If you were to introduce, say, a box of toys to this system, it would either be tossed all by itself into an unorganized spot of the attic, or would be put in one of these piles, which would make the pile lose its category. Resist the temptation, and decide on a toy section in this kind of example.

Also, since it’s the attic, you probably want something airtight to keep everything in. Most attics are not insulated, or done so as an afterthought, so aren’t all that great at keeping things protected from the environment outside. I keep all materials in airtight containers, and I suggest you do the same.

Organizing the storage in your attic isn’t hard – it just takes time up front. But if you use that time, you’ll end up with things much easier later down the road.

There are other storage options as well. Perhaps you want to empty out everything in an attic but the most important things. Or perhaps you are concerned about the most valuable things getting stolen. Self storage units and storage garages are available. You can buy or rent out secure self storage. In fact there are even auctions held where you can buy storage rooms held by other people and the stuff inside as well as you bid hoping to get the perfect bin that costs a lower bid than the stuff is worth. Generally that is a risky endeavor though and you should only consider renting secure self storage at an affordable price. You are not just paying for keeping your stuff locked away safely, you are paying for keeping your house free from clutter as everything else can go in the self storage unit.
